The protest was to bring attention to the racial disparity that was becoming more visible, and in too many cases, more deadly in the United States.
Donald Trump does not care about that as it neither addresses his wants, nor puts a spotlight on him.
So seeing a way of appearing to be something he is not, and wanting to be a hero to his base, among whom are the owners of the NFL teams who benefit from his support of the 1%, Trump used his bully pulpit Misrepresented the purpose of the football players’ protest and promoted the lie that the protest was an insult to the troops as was disrespectful of them
He distracted people by claiming that it was the NFL players against the troops, not NFL players against deadly racial disparity.
Because it was more comfortable to accept his claim than to deal with the actual, rather uncomfortable truth, and as accepting his claim made “others” the bad guys and removed the need for some national introspection and examination of the collective conscience, Trump’s claim made it possible to exercise some pseudo-patriotism and in the name of the troops allow the disparity to go unaddressed.
And Mike Pence is so happy that the White owners have put their Black players in their place.
