Mexico’s Foreign Minister, Luis Videgaray, has said,
“There’s no way that could happen. There are no circumstances…not even the best possible trade deal, investments, support which would justify taking a step that would violate the dignity of Mexicans to such an extent.”
Donald Trump’s original plan, as he kept espousing it on the campaign trail, was that Mexico would pay for the wall, and he would repeat that so his supporters would assume that the paying would occur during the building so as not to cost U.S. citizens anything, but as of last week, that has morphed t his new, post-election plan that Mexico would repay the United States for the wall.
Now the money is to come from the Republican-led Congress’s vote to approve the funding.
If Mexico turns down this new plan, just as it did the first, Trump has vowed to get rid a joint trade deal with Mexico and slap a hefty border tax on goods produced in Mexico.
And if Mexico finds the work shoddy, they have precedents for not paying the imposed debt.
Donald Trump’s DC hotel has an unpaid $5 million debt, and that has resulted in 3 contractors filing a lawsuit against the president elect’s Trump Organization.
The money is owed for work done by the Washington plumbing and heating owned by Joseph J. Magnolia Inc. which is owed $2.98 million, Maryland company AES Electrical Inc. which is owed $2.075 million, and A&D Construction of Virginia still waiting for its $79,700 for installing base and crown moldings.
These are not the only unpaid bills for work completed.
200 liens have been filed against Trump by contractors and employees going back to the 1980s. They were not filed just by people who did work on his properties, but lawyers who represented him in some of the law suit against him for non-payment.
Trumps defense was,

I’ll deduct from their contract, absolutely. That’s what the country should be doing.”
At the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, Trump had failed to pay at least 253 subcontractors in full or on time.
According to Trump Plaza president Jack O’Connell,
“Part of how he did business as a philosophy was to negotiate the best price he could, and then when it came time to pay the bills, Trump would say ‘I’m going to pay you but I’m going to pay you 75% of what we agreed to.'”
After working a 10 day Passover event at Trump National Doral Miami club settled 48 servers had to sue for unpaid overtime that averaged $800 per.
A Florida judge later ordered that Doral Miami should be foreclosed and sold to pay a painter more than $30,000 for his work. Trump had decided not to pay the full amount because he had, in spite of the provisions agreed to in the contract, “already paid enough.”
Maybe Mexico can get out of Trump’s unilateral contract by tossing the United States a peso and claiming that is all the U.S. taxpayers will be reimbursed because they have already paid enough.
