The confusing boycott

So I am sitting at the bar sipping my beer when the woman a few stools down proudly announces that, because of Colin Kaepetrnick and the NFL, which apparently is irresponsibly allowing him to exercise his First Amendment right to free speech, she is boycotting the  NFL.

She will not watch any game that is televised, nor will she buy a ticket to any game, even though with Foxborough and the Patriots being only a 40 minute drive away, she has never done anyway.

The bar has various pools going on in any given sports season, however, and she did point out that she would be watching the local news and cable TV stations for the post game talking head shows to get all the game wrap ups so she will be aware of where she stands in the football pool.

Now I have never watched Game of Thrones, the Walking Dead, Dancing with the Stars, the Bachelorette, or RuPaul’s Drag Race, nor do I read articles about them, nor do I watch entertainment shows to keep abreast of the plots and winners, and they all seem to be doing just fine without me.

Somehow a boycott of the NFL would include, it seems to me, more than just not watching games on TV if there was a real desire to deny someone his Constitutional rights.

And I suppose I should mention that as she walked out after finishing her drink, she explained she was wearing her Tom Brady jersey that she had recently purchased to protest his having been suspended for four games

Her need to boycott the NFL and her protesting the Brady business included buying NFL merchandise.
