According to the Republican Party, there is no need for the EPA’s water rules, the Clean Water Act, or for any type of regulations and inspections that helps guarantee clean water.
I mean, just look at Flint, Michigan, and what’s happening to the rivers in Virginia. Michigan and Virginia have Republican leadership that abhors the laws that protect their people.
The GOP in congress wants to do away with the Clean Water Act.
We should all be familiar now with the story of Flint where in 2014 the state switched the city’s water source to the Flint River to save money, and residents began to complain about the quality of tap water.
In spite of expressed concerns by doctors and an internal memo at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services warning that lead poisoning rates were higher than usual for children under 16, state officials insisted it was safe to drink the water.
Then, a Flint pediatrician reported in September that there was an unusually high level of lead in Flint’s children.
The Governor, Rick Snyder, apologized for the incident, activated the national guard, called for President Barack Obama to declare an emergency, and accepted the resignation of the head of the state’s Department of Environmental Quality.
A spokesman for Rick Snyder said he didn’t become aware of the lead issue until October in spite of an email that had been sent in July of last summer, three months before he claims to have become aware of the problem.
Bernie Sanders has called for the resignation of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder because, let’s face it, after what is coming out, like the governor and his administration knowing longer than claimed, avoiding filtering the water at the cost of $100 a day to save money, assigning only four National Guard members to handle the distribution of bottled water to the whole city, and still demanding that the citizens pay the water bill for the contaminated water they had to drink, an apology just doesn’t cut it.

As Sanders said,
“There are no excuses. The governor long ago knew about the lead in Flint’s water. He did nothing. As a result, hundreds of children were poisoned. Thousands may have been exposed to potential brain damage from lead. Gov. Snyder should resign. Because of the conduct by Gov. Snyder’s administration and his refusal to take responsibility, families will suffer from lead poisoning for the rest of their lives. Children in Flint will be plagued with brain damage and other health problems. The people of Flint deserve more than an apology.”
Hillary Clinton suggested Michigan pay for water purchases from Detroit for Flint residents until their water is safe again.
David Murray, a Snyder spokesman, got a little defensive when he said that Sanders’s demands didn’t contribute to solving the water issue now.
“The best thing for the people of Flint is that every effort is focused on solving this emergency, getting the aid needed to help the residents, and ensuring that clean drinkable water is restored to the city. Political statements and finger pointing from political candidates not involved in finding solutions for Flint, only serve to distract from solving this crisis.”
Of course he ignores that, although it wasn’t in the form of words, the governor’s actions, or lack thereof was a political statement.
When his action were criticized by both Sanders and Clinton at the Sunday night debate, Governor Snyder tweeted,
“Political statements and finger pointing from political candidates only distract from solving the Flint water crisis.”
Apparently the governor feels the issue should be downplayed in spite of thousands of people in Flint drinking, cooking, and bathing in lead-poisoned water because Governor Snyder decided to save a few bucks.
And, anyway, now that the cat it out of the bag and his negligence exposed, Snyder says he’s “committed to ensuring every Flint resident has access to clean and safe drinking water”, something he should have been doing long before he got caught.
