The Hillary chant

Back before anyone had declared their intentions for the 2016 presidential election, the GOP began talking about Hillary Clinton, and began looking for anything that could prove she would not be a good president.

Their mouthpieces, Fox News and Rush Limbaugh among them, seemed to be helping them in that.

And she hadn’t even said she was running.

Their fear of her was anticipatory.

I ran this cartoon back before she declares, which would have been in the spring of 2014:

Now she is a declared candidate.

I watched both GOP debates this past Tuesday night, and noticed that whenever they could work her name in, instead of telling us what they, the GOP candidates, would do, they would, instead, tell us to fear Hillary.

That seems an awful weak  strategy.

Instead of telling us what they would do to “take America Back”, or “Make America great again”, they told us to take time out of our lives and look things up on their web sites, although they were standing right there and could have told us. We were watching, after all, so they had our attention, but they would tell us to fear Hillary, instead.

Hoping we would look something up at another time seemed a bad approach.

So, when they had the chance to explain their plans to us, which may have brought us to their side, we kept hearing the name Hillary Clinton.

Chris Christie seemed obsessed. Any time he was asked to explain himself, he mentioned Hillary.

Her name came up 40 times.

She must have loved that.

In any campaign, name repetition is a good thing.
