Wisconsin is the latest state to decide that poor people should only eat healthy food, by which they mean what the lawmakers consider healthy. They need to end abuses that they have yet to define or even find.
Because, left to their own devices when planning a month’s meals they will, of course, go extravagant, poor people will not be able to buy crab, lobster, or other shellfish with food stamps, and would have to spend two-thirds of their benefits on produce, beef, pork, poultry, potatoes, dairy products, or food available under the Women, Infants and Children nutrition program.
Missouri Republicans wanted to ban the purchase of steak and seafood, along with cookies, chips, energy drinks, and soft drinks.
Kansas won’t allow welfare money being spent on swimming pools and visits to the movie theater.
“It’s a restriction that’s designed just to make the lives of those that are already struggling that much harder,” said Democratic Representative Lisa Subeck from Madison, Wiconsin, “and instead, we should be focusing not on the foods people buy but on putting people to work by creating jobs that get people off of FoodShare (Wisconsin’s version of food stamps).”
Of course, even as corporations get taxpayer supported subsidies that are often given to the executives as bonuses, these same lawmakers have yet to restrict what foods they can purchase.

Government overreach is only wrong, it seems, when it is applied to the rich. Like the Second Amendment right to bear arms is to be respected and honored except if the person or group exercising that right happens to be of the minority persuasion.
And, while usually condemning any restrictions and expenses forced on small businesses by government, these lawmakers have no problem requiring that small businesses install expensive equipment to control what is being bought with food stamps.
But we are talking about poor people, so things that are usually wrong, are required.
