In 2021, a 35-year-old man committed suicide while in a facility run by Sheriff Thomas Hodgson of Bristol County in Massachusetts.

By itself this would have been enough if not too much, but also in 2021 a 39 year-old male and a 31 year-old female took their own lives as well.

According to the Massachusetts State Auditor in the two-year period, 2016-2018, there were five inmate suicides. The three suicides in 2021 added to just these five means the sheriff has a suicide problem which he refuses to acknowledge or address with anything other than excuses.

The number of suicides in that two year period and the year 2021 do not include suicides from other years, nor does it include the suicide attempts interrupted in time, such as the four attempts in 2016 and the two in 2017.

For a number of years now, many social justice organizations and this blog have been speaking about and against the number of suicides in the Bristol County House of Corrections with the sheriff claiming that the complaints were merely political attacks on him from people who were basically being mean to him. He even at one time claimed such criticism was attacking Trump.

A 2018 investigation by the state’s Attorney General’s office found that inmates placed on suicide watch faced poor conditions, limited time outside of their small, segregated cells, and few, if any, educational, social, recreational, or rehabilitation programs.

In the spirit of the Sheriff Thomas Hodgson’s practice of brushing important things aside because addressing them does not fit his self-assumed tough guy image or a political purpose, most recently his dismissal of any need to close down or completely update the 1888 Ash Street Jail that was slated for closure 30 years ago by stating,

You can almost hear this pair whining to their parents that they should be able to go to the mall because everyone is there.

So, suicides, regardless of number and frequency, are perfectly okay in the Bristol County House of Corrections because, hey, suicides happen.
