In 1972 Richard Nixon ran for re-election emphasizing the strong economy and his success in foreign affairs.

Running against him was George McGovern who ran on calling for an immediate end to the Vietnam War and the institution of a guaranteed minimum income, what is now considered a “progressive” concept.

Two side tracks of note were that Nixon’s campaign committee had tried to bug the Democrat Party HQ at the Watergate complex, and McGovern’s running mate, Tomas Eagleton had to step away because it was “revealed” he had undergone treatment for depression. Any form of “mental illness” in those days meant a person just had to basically be crazy.

With Nixon being the first member of the Party of Lincoln to win the South, he won in 49 of the 50 states with the outlier, Massachusetts, contemplating digging a moat to separate the Bay State from all the other states which would see their mistake over the next few years as Watergate led to a presidential resignation.

Well, now it is not just Massachusetts, but all six states in New England that have to build that moat.

But we have always been protective of the theory of the United States up here in New England especially since John Adams wrote the Massachusetts Constitution which along with the Articles of Confederation and the design of Iroquois Confederacy became the basis of the U.S. Constitution

Because of New England’s opposition to the war of 1812 and some of the shipping and fishing restriction that were imposed because of it, from December 15, 1814 to January 5, 1815 a series of meetings was held in Hartford Connecticut, The Hartford Convention,  during which New England Federalists discussed their opposition to the ongoing War of 1812 and the federal government’s increasing power.

Unfortunately not because of human decency but for political ones, the convention also dealt with the 3/5 Compromise that had rankled New Englanders from its inception, proposed requiring a two-thirds majority in Congress for the admission of new states, declarations of war, and creating laws restricting trade, and discussed their grievances with the Louisiana Purchase.

However, Andrew Jackson won the unnecessary battle of New Orleans after the war ended and people got so excited that the secession idea died, as did the independence and humanity of the Native Americans as Jackson would eventually become president and the champion of Indian Removal to, of all places, land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase.

In spite of the war ending and most concerns being rendered moot, the Hartford Convention did determine,

“A severance of the Union by one or more states against the will of the rest, and especially in a time of war, can be justified only by absolute necessity,”

and one such specific necessity was “direct and open resistance” when abuses go too far.

Previously, in 1804 the Massachusetts Legislature had resolved that the Louisiana Purchase

“formed a new confederacy, to which the states united by the former compact are not bound to adhere.”

Subsequently, when in 1811 Louisiana becoming a state was the topic, Josiah Quincy said,

It was clear to him that taking their cue from Jefferson, Southern citizens would flock to the new territory making it a collection of slave states with the 3/5 Compromise keeping slave states in control in Washington to the detriment of the free states.

When Jefferson was elected and Britain and France were at war, he enacted a trade embargo that prohibited Americans from trading with either country, and this did not sit well with New Englanders who decried the negative impact on the region’s dependence on trade.

Jefferson’s successor, James Madison, also from Virginia, enforced Jefferson’s embargo more stringently, and New England Federalists feared the war would permanently cut them off from British trade. It was when the governors of Massachusetts and Connecticut refused to send state troops to fight the British, and Connecticut denounced the government’s conscription plan as unconstitutional, that Madison ordered federal troops into New England to get cooperation and quell civil unrest and the Hartford Convention was called to air grievances against the federal government

And here we are today, once again the canary in the coal mine that is the present United States.
