I have written about the sheriff of Bristol County Massachusetts, Thomas Hodgson, in the past.
Because of his systematic cruelty toward people in his custody; his denying basic health care, medically assisted treatment, and nutritious food; his having the highest suicide rate among 13 county jails in the state; exploiting families through over-priced phone calls and canteen purchases; his lack of programs/policies that help people stay out of jail; and his constant travel to Washington DC on the taxpayers’ dime, a group I belong to, Bristol County for Correctional Justice (BCCJ) has called for a march from downtown New Bedford to the Ash Street Jail, also in New Bedford, on Saturday, January 18 starting at 1:00 pm.
I was on a Saturday morning radio show on what is a rather conservative station on the South Coast to advertise the event.
In the course of my time on air I was able to explain the above points and our desire to have the sheriff resign if he would rather be a national figure with obvious ties, or attempts to solidify ties, with the Trump administration than do his actual job.
I did my best to stay with facts and avoid personal opinion.
There were two topics that came up that were of interest to me, and, since he brought them up, the radio show host.
BCCJ has uncovered facts that show that the sheriff’s anti-immigrant attitudes are fueled by his involvement with FAIR, (Federation for American Immigration Reform), in reality an anti-immigrant group that relies heavily on bigotry, but there are those, among them the local media, who claim that this is wishful speculation as we had nothing more definite as proof than his attendance at their meetings and his being on their National Board of Advisors and listed as such on the organization’s website.
On the radio after my scheduled appearance and I had left the studio unaware he was going to have his say by phone, the sheriff countered the assertion that we taxpayers foot the bill for his self-promoting trips by stating that FAIR has paid for his attendance at meetings.
Obviously, ours was not wishful speculation
The other topic, and the one that really got the radio show host’s attention, was the idea that the sheriff would have reported his church to the White House via email for its having pamphlets advising all immigrants on how to deal with ICE if at any time they have interactions.
There is a large immigrant community on the South Coast of Massachusetts, and, so, there is a strong chance people will have those interactions.
The pamphlets gave instructions on how to handle these interactions without complicating them through fear. The email stated,
“Stephen [Miller], thought you might like to see samples of cards I discovered in a holder at the back of St. Julie’s Church in Dartmouth, MA. While attending mass last Sunday, I noticed a holder on a table near the entrance marked, ‘ICE-Immigration’ and noticed the three stacks of colored cards. Trying to determine if this is an isolated situation or a common occurrence in other parish churches.”
According the sheriff when he spoke on the radio, he had been standing at the back of the church during mass with the ushers when a man came in and stood behind the last pew as if he was checking out those in the church before quietly leaving.
The sheriff said he became concerned because the man might have been checking out the scene in order to go get a weapon and return to shoot up the church. And that is why, according to the sheriff, he reported his church to the White House because of the immigrant related pamphlets.
Considering that most mass shootings are perpetrated by citizens, and white ones for that matter, that was quite a leap in logic.
He could have just as easily justified reporting on the ushers as they were standing at the back of the church looking over the congregation when their only job is to lead people to open seats in a crowded church before mass and passing the collection plates, and should have been sitting and participating in the standing, sitting, kneeling, and singing the rest of the time.
He added that that same man could have observed where his intended target was sitting and then could conveniently take a seat close to him and shoot that person at close range.
But that is his logic.
He went on further to explain that while the email to Miller, Trump’s immigration policy architect, had been sent two years ago, he had only talked with his pastor after the email became public, not before sending it or even after, but only when he had been caught two years after the fact for having sent it.
He loosely uses the rather subliminal term ”criminal illegal aliens” when speaking of anyone in Bristol County without documentation, so that people will unconsciously get a very negative and fear filled impression of these people so that whatever he does will be accepted as best for the rest of us.
He cannot refer to facts to justify his bigotry, so he plays Hop-Scotch with logic.
He needs to go, and people need to make that known , and then make it happen.
