I once lived in a state where the majority of voters were convinced that Unions, either through mandatory membership or “shop fees” that helped cover the expenses of collective bargaining, were assaulting their basic human right to have a job. It seemed to escape the voters that those promoting the “Right to Work” idea were the owners and investors in companies who knew that if they could weaken Unions and eliminate collective bargaining they could pay the workers less and stop paying for benefits like healthcare, increase their profits and dividends, and, if they weren’t stopped from doing so by the legal minimum wage, would pay their workers insultingly low wages.

People, more easily led than willing to do some research and thinking, were convinced that management was attempting to protect the worker from the ravenous unions, and the voters accepted this idea ignoring that Unions came about because workers wanted protection from a greedy management. Appealing to patriotism and Jesus, the promoters of Right to Work convinced the voters that only they could protect them from the evil Unions who were, somehow, the entity that kept their hours, wages, and conditions of employment down.

The ballot measure passed, and workers wages became stagnant, although they are still confused as to why.

The best way to measure a plan is to assess the results after it is implemented, and it has been found that the quality of life in right-to-work states, on average, is poorer than in states that didn’t buy the lie, and still don’t restrict union contract rights.
