There is an obvious lack of reasoning when the White House confidently claims it as fact that there are “unknown Middle Easterners” in the caravan of people coming up from Central America.

If they are, indeed, “unknown”, how have they been identified with such certainty?

Mike Pence, who indulged in this baseless claim attempted to show this was a reasonable claim bu claiming,

“it’s inconceivable that there are not people of Middle Eastern descent in a crowd of more than 7,000 people advancing toward our border”,

supplying no facts.

Any claim can be made about anything if that is all the proof that is needed.

He then went on to be more specific by stating later that,

“In the last fiscal year, we apprehended more than 10 terrorists or suspected terrorists per day at our southern border, from countries that are referred to in the lexicon as“In the last fiscal year, we apprehended more than 10 terrorists or suspected terrorists per day at our southern border, from countries that are referred to in the lexicon as ‘other than Mexico.’ That means, ‘from the Middle East region.’” That means, ‘from the Middle East region.’”

The most obvious flaw with this, and one that shows the administrations lack of knowledge of Central America and its indifference to the conditions created by the United States for decades that are the reasons for this migration is the claim that those in the caravan who are from places  “other than Mexico” and, therefore have to be  ‘from the Middle East region’” overlooks the fact that these people are coming from Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras, none of which is Mexico.

Then Pence doubled down on his reference to the 10 terrorist a day claim by stating,

“The United States of American intervenes and prevents 10 terrorists, or suspected terrorists, from coming into our country every day. So it is inconceivable that there would not be individuals from the Middle East as a part of this growing caravan.”

But although he repeated the 10 figure, in this statement he did not refer to the Southern Border because while there may have been ten apprehended suspected terrorists, the apprehensions occurred at all ports of entry and not just at the Southern Border as he had previously claimed.

A fine example of initially putting false information in people’s minds by making an authoritative statement that people will latch onto and hold tight,  sure that most people may not hear the subtle correction in the second statement.

The 10 figure that is being used in reference to the Southern Border is a convenient and inappropriate use of that figure to create a fiction as that figure comes from the statement made last June by Kirstjen Nelson, Secretary of Homeland Security, wh ha sai,

“In fact, on average, my department now blocks 10 known or suspected terrorists a day from traveling to or attempting to enter the United States.”

There is nothing in that statement that would back up Pence’s original statement.

Home Land Security has stated as well that,

“The data concerns individuals attempting to travel to the United States by air, sea, or land. On average last year, DHS prevented 10 individuals tied to terror—known or suspect terrorists—each day from traveling or attempting to travel to the United States. These are individuals that hit against U.S. terror watchlists.”

Having no facts to back a clam, the real facts are twisted, and this is not hat a vice-president should be doing.
