As if to distract from the sheriff’s financially questionable activities, his grandstanding around the country to support Trump’s bigotry toward people of color at white supremacist gatherings and in far right (white) media outlets admittedly at the expense of the taxpayers, his violations of the human rights of those in his care, his jails having a suicide rate twice the state average and three times higher than the national average, the second-highest recidivism rate among county jails while inmates, more than half of whom, have yet to have their day in court and are innocent until proven guilty, deal with designed starvation, medical and psychological neglect, price gouging in the commissary, and mistreatment by staff, the article lets you know he is a good and kind man because he has a once a week Bible study group in his jails.

He advertises some pretty good programs on his website that would leave a person with the impression that when people leave his orbit they have been rehabilitated and prepared to return to society better people, but in reality he has a once a week Bible study that is attended by a miniscule number of inmates while he ignores or minimizes the religious needs of the rest of the jail population.

And, in spite of this program reportedly having been in place for twenty years, it only came to the public’s attention just after the BCCJ’s visit to the State House.

What a divine coincidence, and, of course, its timing had nothing to do with an attempt to create a distraction.

But, as is his stock and trade, just as with his other claims, he either refuses to back them up with facts or doesn’t have any facts with which to do that, and neither his department nor the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association are able to support his claim.

His claims are sound and fury signifying nothing, so he distracts with an appeal to his feigned religiosity while simply sweeping his victims under the rug.
