I spent the Reagan years teaching in Los Angeles and we occasionally got a new student from a Central America. This was at a middle school and some of the things some kids dealt with would kill most adults.
Some state legislator proposed a bill requiring teachers to ascertain the new student’s citizen status and report this to some data collector
Teachers teach whoever is in the room no questions asked. This was requiring teachers to be the eyes and ears off border patrol would create an adversarial atmosphere that would replace education with fear and make the teachers people to be feared.
Teachers made it very clear in advance that they would not comply and would not turn on our students who had come here because the Reagan administration’s policies created the environment they had escaped and should not be looking for ways to send victims back to where they will, once again, face death.
These were kids.
The legislation died because teachers stood up as a group .
Here we are, again, with wanting to send victims back to their prey and violating human rights in the process.
And this is FORTY years later.
These are cartoons regarding immigrants and the attempts to treat them as less than human, and most are from the previous Trump Administration.
