Yesterday
was the first anniversary of the Biden Administration and as is usual with Democrats,
part of their retrospective of the First Year was listing those things that
have yet to be done while not listing those things that have been.
Hearing
the Democrats whine about what needs to be done left the impression that nothing
has been done by the Biden Administration.
Oddly, while having C-SPAN droning on the TV as I write and draw, I noticed that the Republicans who rose to speak in opposition to both the end of the filibuster and the voting rights bill constantly listed all the “socialist” things that Biden has accomplished like they were bad things. They railed against future socialism by listing what had been done so far as a warning.
And
the list was long.
The
GOP knows Biden has accomplished things because they condemn those things
non-stop, so he must have done something.
Not
according to the Dems.
The
GOP will pick a scrap of paper off the ground and morph that into their having taken
major steps to safeguard the environment. Democrats will pick up the paper and
then lament there is so much more paper they should pick up. so no one sees the
paper they picked up and assume it wasn’t.
Democrats
need to start emphasizing what they have done as opposed only emphasizing what
still needs to be done.

When
I was a kid there was a swimming place in town with a floating raft. I thought I was clever when I would joke as I
had swum from the beach and was within feet of the raft, that it was just too
far from the beach and I didn’t think I could make it, so I should just swim
back.
I had no idea this would become a common practice in the Democratic Party.
They will ignore how far they had come and will give up because they only see what distance still needs to be covered. They ignore how far from the shore they have swum and will only mention the short distance they still have to cover as if they had not covered any previous ground (water in this case).
If you want to know what the Biden Administration has accomplished, don’t listen to the Democrats. They will tell you nothing.
Listen to the GOP in their condemnation, they constantly list the accomplishments.
Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis,
wants a law that prohibits making White people uncomfortable in private
businesses and schools when they train employees or teach students about
discrimination in the nation’s past, and would allow parents to sue schools and
employers if they were to do so.
His desired bill, approved by the
Senate Education Committee, takes aim at critical race theory, the latest
bogeyman of the conservative right even as it is a non-issue as schools do not
teach CRT.
During the discussion of the
bill, supporters could not provide any examples of teachers or businesses
telling students or employees that they are racist because of their race.
As state Senator Shevrin Jones,
pointed out,
“At no point did anyone say
white people should be held responsible for what happened, but what I would ask
my white counterparts is, are you an enabler of what happened or are you going
to say we must talk about history?
“This bill’s not for Blacks,
this bill was not for any other race. This was directed to make whites not feel
bad about what happened years ago.”
DeSantis considers critical race
theory “crap”.
Critical race theory came about
as a result of the lack of progress following the Civil Right legislation of
the 1960s and has been dealt with in college and university law schools
beginning in the 1970s and 1980s.
It came about because, in spite
of good intentions, it became obvious that racism is systemic in the nation’s
institutions and that many laws had been written to favor Whites and
effectively lock minorities out of full participation in the American Dream.
Most of us are familiar with how
racism did limit the advancement of minorities as a matter of course. It is
obvious in some cases that do not need to be pointed out, but also subtly in
other examples that were not so obvious.
Lewis Templeton, a former slave,
who invented the toggle harpoon that was instrumental in making New Bedford MA
the richest city per capita in the U.S, at one point, died in poverty in the
shadows of the mansions his invention was instrumental in making possible, and
this in a city where the Abolition Movement actually began because of the
Quaker belief in equality.
Just after the Civil War, in 1866, Jack Daniel’s became the first registered distillery in the United States with its whiskey subsequently becoming the top selling American whiskey in the world. The friendly “white pastor” who allegedly gave his friend, Jack, the recipe from which his family made its fortune was actually a slave named Dan who got nothing from it.
When
the abundance of lumber that could be obtain in Indian Territory, now Oklahoma,
was replaced with abundant petroleum, by the careful application of fuzzy laws
and the creation of new ones, Whites were given ways to legally swindle Native
Americans out of their land and resources so that, instead of being the richest
people in the state, they are dependent on the state while those who stole
their land and future are praised for their wealth.
Members
of the tribes are where they are today because of the racism of the past
obvious or not.

the good houses.
The bill holds that,
“An individual, by virtue of
his or her race or sex, does not bear responsibility for actions committed in
the past by other members of the same race or sex. An individual should not be
made to feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological
distress on account of his or her race.”
The bill’s sponsor, Republican
Senator Manny Diaz, defended it explaining,
“No individual is inherently
racist, sexist or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously, solely by
the virtue of his or her race or sex. No race is inherently superior to another
race.”
This may be true, but the
majority made rules that favored themselves over others, and in the United
States that meant racially based laws like Jim Crow and accepted practices like
Redlining.
For his part, like a Christian
zealot who cherry picks Bible verses often out of context and without going on
to the rest of the passage that renders the verse incorrectly applied, DeSantis
thought his invoking the name of Martin Luther King would justify anything.
“You think about what MLK
stood for, He said he didn’t want people judged on the color of their skin but
on the content of their character. You listen to some of these people nowadays,
they don’t talk about that.”
We are not necessarily talking
about people doing that now but correcting the lopsided results that came from
past decisions that were based on race.
DeSantis does not want to make
any course correction because those he relies on for money won’t like it.
Imagine where the descendants of
the Slave who gave us Jack Daniels, or Lewis Templeton, or Oklahoma’s Native-Americans
could have been had they profited starting from when their ancestors should
have been allowed the fruits of their labor and not cheated out of it by legal machinations
supported by racist courts.
Maybe the descendants of the racists who created the laws could help undo the damage of their ancestors by taking the appropriate steps after an honest examination to at least ty to set thing straight unless they are quite happy with the results and do not want anything that might weaken that.

Kyrsten Sinema did not
just kill the Voting Rights Bill as she said she would but took the dramatic
step to do so on the senate floor in a speech defending the filibuster that effectively
killed the bill on the spot.
The filibuster is a
senate rule that requires a 60-vote threshold for most bills to proceed through
the Senate. It is a convenient and lazy replacement for s senator standing up
and speaking until time for consideration ran out.
Without 6o votes to pass
the bill or to change the rules like what had been done regarding the Debt
Ceiling, in a very public way complete with an unnecessary lecture, both the Freedom
to Vote and and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act died.
She threw the bill in
front of those who have been opposing a minimum amount of early voting days and
reinstating federal regulations that help mitigate discriminatory voting
practices which would make voting more accessible.
In the past, Sinema favored
avoiding the filibuster by using the reconciliation process because Republicans
“never had 60 votes
and they managed to do a lot of bad things done during that time,”
and stating in the next sentence
in that recorded speech,
“The reconciliation
process is still quite available, and we will use it for good rather than for
evil”.
Not only blind to her sudden
about face that belies her claim she always held what she claims now,she
does not see the glaring parallel in her reference to Joe Lieberman during the
votes on healthcare when the Dems had the senate as she condemned him in that
same speech for doing then what she is doing now, i.e. defending the use of the
filibuster over reconciliation to get a simple majority vote.
“some might argue we
never had 60, because one of those votes was Joseph Lieberman, but that’s
whatever. So now there’s none of this
false pressure to get to 60… the Democrats can stop kowtowing to Joe
Lieberman and instead seek other avenues”.
But, as I watched her
speech feeling like Bart Simpson getting a lecture from Marge, one he will
erase from memory the moments she stops talking, I was struck by something that
just seemed to be so out of place. It could have been a signal of a change of
life or something to fool a certain segment of the population that, while, perhaps,
not in word and deed, but in ideology, there is a bond, or it was a simple, but
odd choice of accessory.
For some reason while
she was running for the senate, I would get emails from her campaign. I read up
on her, wished her well while accepting the fact that her being pretty much on
the other side of the country needed less of my attention than local things. I
was, therefore, happy that she won.
Although she was born
and raised as a Mormon, she now claims to have no religion, and that would
include any Christianity in whatever form.
She is the first U.S.
Senator to claim no religion. When she was sworn in as senator, she put her hand
on the Constitution, not the Bible, signaling her separation from religion and
her acknowledgment that the Constitution, not the Bible, is the foundation of
the laws in this country.
After admitting these
two laws are important because,
“The state laws we seek to address are symptoms
of a larger, more deeply-rooted problem facing our democracy – the divisions
themselves, which have hardened in recent years, and have combined with rampant

And that
“I
share the concerns of civil rights advocates and others I have heard from in
recent months about these state laws.
I
strongly support those efforts to contest these laws in court, and to invest
significant resources into these states to better organize and stop efforts to
restrict access at the ballot box.
And
I strongly support and will continue to vote for legislative responses to
address these state laws – including the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis
Voting Rights Advancement Act, that the Senate is currently considering,”
She explained
that rather than skip over the filibuster, at least bringing t hebill up for a
discussion and a vote the results of which could go either way, because there
are problems with the rule and its application, it should be allowed to stand
with possible adjustments later.
She
sees the rule is wrong and should be redone, modified, eliminated by bringing
back the requirement to hold the floor, but would rather let states trample on
people’s voting rights and get around to doing corrections later.
Sinema
sees her she-shed on fire and stands there with a connected hose waiting for
the firetruck to arrive rather than take a simple step to avoid greater
destruction in the meantime.
The
thing that got me, though, was not what she was saying. I’ve heard her say much
the same before. I usually have C-SPAN or something non-plotted droning in the background
as I drink my morning coffee while sketching cartoon idea only needing to
occasionally look at the TV screen. And while Kyrsten Sinema was speaking I
happened to look at the screen and there was just that one little, almost
unnoticeable something different about her appearance.
It
wasn’t her hair, a new set of glasses or the dress she was wearing.
It was
the perfectly sized, silver cross on a chain hanging around the neck of a
person who claims no religion and is noted as a senator for that.
This past weekend that the former, twice disgraced, and
traitorous president had a rally where, as is his schtick, threw out disjointed
and unproven claims, some, perhaps, made up on the spot, to see which ones
would stick.
It was the actual birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as
opposed the Monday holiday, and to celebrate, Donald Trump gave a speech to
promote, even create, a racial divide and foment anger among citizens.
The old throw things at walls approach to giving everyone
something to chew on.
According to #45,
“The left is now rationing life-saving
therapeutics based on race, discriminating against and denigrating, just
denigrating white people to determine who lives and who dies.
You get it based on race. In fact, in New York
state, if you’re white, you have to go to the back of the line to get medical
help. If you’re white, you go right to the back of the line.”
Although this claim is in no way true and came
out of darker regions, it does reveal that while rationing life-saving
therapeutics based on race and sexual orientation, especially as this discrimination
and denigration determine who lives and who dies, those doing so were totally
aware, of what they were doing and how it affected their targets and now are so
frightened they might be treated that same way.
Had it been that good then, there would be no
fear of a different application now.
His claim is based on a Wall Street Journal
opinion piece that said that since COVID-19 treatments are in short supply New
York state has published guidelines for allocating supplies including the
obvious notation that as “non-white race or Hispanic/Latino ethnicity

people have been vaccinated and boosted, he threw out,

as yet, when the whaling Ship, Essex, set out to sea its crew were Nantucket

who returned from such voyages told the people. What a Nantucket man told you
the truth, anyone telling you different should be looked at with suspicion.
And
so it was that, when the whale sunk the ship in the pacific the crew, in
deciding which direction to head chose to head East because, as Nantucket men

center piece of the feast.
In
the end, the months long voyage across expansive seas with hunger and thirst
ironically forcing the survivors to cannibalize the departed was the wrong

necessary to do what both of those positions required and also has experience
in corrections in both Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, has stepped
forward as has Fall River attorney
Nicholas Bernier.
Both candidates may have
their own priorities, but both believe that with the proper innovative and more
appropriate programs, the sheriff’s office could be brought up to being a model
of how a house of corrections can be run by improving safety for inmates and
working conditions for corrections officers while improving drug rehabilitation
programs for inmates and reentry programs for housing, employment, health care,
and drug treatment upon release.
Just doing it the way we do
it has led to high suicide rates and high recidivism rates because, among other
things not done, as he laments how mental illness and addiction make the
inmates more difficult, the sheriff has no effective programs to deal with
either and there is no preparation for a return to society which, sadly, just
puts people back into the environment in which they committed their crime with
few options.

For
the first thirty years, my life was a variation of the expected norm. I grew up
thinking, as kids do, that when I became an adult, my life would be like all
the adults I knew, pretty much just like my parents.
I
was Boston Irish Catholic living in a new growing suburb of Boston with a lot
of other Boston Irish Catholics who moved there after the Second World War to
live the life they had fought for, and that meant attending an elementary
school run by nuns at a parish where being an altar boy was an expectations,
while joining the parish sponsored boy scout troop was optional, and going to
all the weddings, first Communions, Baptisms either as an attendee, relative,
or the altar boy who was thanked for serving at the ceremony with an invitation
to any number of gatherings that followed which meant free eats.
Wanting
to become a priest was not an uncommon desire for kids like me and, although in
this day and age it would appear to be as medieval as it was but, at the time,
just part of the Catholic Church, I entered a high school seminary like I was
living in a less strict monastery than others, got a great education, decided
it wasn’t for me, and left to attend college so I could get a good job, get
married, buy a house, have kids, eventually retire, have grand kids, and die of
old age. Basically, I would live a life I had seen modeled, that of all the
adults around me.
I
did the responsible thing of getting a degree, two actually, teaching school,
singing in the church choir, buying a house, being active in my community, and
hoping to find a mate.
Beneath
it all, however, there was something that was not making it all click, a part
of me whose signs I had not seen because they had been so out of place and
didn’t match the models. They were on the peripheries when they should have
been in the middle.
While
attempting the assumed middleclass life I assumed I was destined for, I slowly
began to accept myself as who I really was, although what that actually meant
was yet to be learned, and at the age of thirty I gave up on what I was trying
just too hard to be and started to learn who I really was. I have to admit, and
there are probably many who can attest, I did my best, but often learned the
wrong thing, missed the lesson or the chance to learn it, and stumbled through
my gestation to the Gay man I would finally get a grasp on.
I was clumsy in my initial Gayness and kept some the clumsiness in spite of attempts to be otherwise.
Suffice
it to say, I could not shake the hold on me that the middleclass model had but
modified it attempting to fit it into the life of the me I was meeting.
Sometimes it was successful. Sometimes it just mucked things all up. I had no
mentors or experience. I was in the burbs. I was, as I finally realized, in the
closet. Sometimes the attempt to meld two world together, the one I grew up in
and the one newly entered, assuming it was easy and possible, was a disaster
with a good bit of embarrassment.
In
my chrysalis process I went through a relationship that died for a variety of
reasons which in retrospect could not really be laid at anyone’s feet but was an
inevitable evolution that, no matter what, would have happened either with a
bang or whimper, but it would have ended.
It
was thirty years ago today, 1/12/1992, that I put on my rollerblades and skated
down to the bike path on the beach as I did on most days after work, heading for
the parking lot across the street from the Gay bar at that end of town because,
although full at night with parked and cruising cars, during the day it was
usually empty leaving the well-worn pavement available for use. I was no expert
on the sport, but I had developed the skills to be able to dance along to the
music on my Walkman and show off for those lounging on the wall that kept the
beach sand off the lot.
I
was there enough to be known, if not by name, by being the guy doing the
skating at that time of day on most days.
My
ex, with whom I had attempted to reunite then accepted a simple and awkward
friendship until he met someone else under somewhat hurtful circumstances for
which there had been bits of foreshadowing and missed cues, had called me
asking if I had a frying pan he could borrow. He was having the new person over

I
am not a good cook, and I can kill one of those forever pans with totally
non-stick surfaces after very little use, so letting anyone borrow one was out
of the question for their own safety.
Along
with my flawless performance before those who I like to imagine were an
enthralled audience, an image I could hold as, whenever I did some really fancy
footwork, jump, or spin, I would get some scattered applause, I was also thinking
of the frying pan.
I
could just keep on skating and life would go on much as it had been, or I could
go buy a frying pan, appear at my ex’s door, and present it to him at which
point he would see what a wonderful guy I was to overcome any resentment as to
for whom the meal was being prepared and was magnanimous to help make his
important night a success.
Who
wouldn’t fall back in love with that person?
What
I did not know at the time was how the decision I made to not buy the frying pan,
for better, worse, or an interesting mixture of both at times, would bring to a
total close my life and all that was connected to it as it had been up to that
point and begin a time when I could live without preconceptions and expectations.
I could attempt to do things that those who knew the previous me, as they had a
hand in molding it, would hold me from doing because, “That’s not you.” I could
push limits and find out just what I was capable of without limits set by
others, perhaps others who were happy in a status quo life.
It
was a really rough start thirty years ago, but when I got a handle on it, I
could be the person I wanted to be because I was the person that I knew I was,
and fail or succeed, the measure would be on what I had done or failed to do
not on how close I did or not live up to other people’s expectations.
Thirty
years ago, when I was reborn, I didn’t find Jesus, I found me and I have been
allowed to be me and let the real me grow, sometimes for the good, sometimes
the occasional oopsie.
It
was thirty years of unexpected events from the overly mundane to the totally
spectacular and meeting people in a variety of places who could be labelled the
same.
