the daily meme

And to add the proper amount of seriousness that implies depth of thought and to give gravity to a statement that advises any of us to experience some unspecified emotional fulfillment by being who we are not being at the moment, solemnity requires the use of the proper font superimposed on some nature based photo.

And a flag somewhere in the shot.

not the best slogan

I have lived in areas whose tourist attractions are limited by the seasons and some where the weather is good all year round so things never close.

Up here in the North East, skiing and beaches take seasonal turns, and those areas that depend on tourists and are places tourists go, like Cape Cod, know how important the idea of Open For Business is to tourist dependent communities and those looking forward to the plywood coming from the windows.

Open for business rarely if ever is proudly announced for something that is negative to morbid. It usually announces that something welcomed has arrived or is back.

While the country is figuring out the intricacies of all that is covid and we greet the announcement that something long closed has reopened, the number of Covid cases nation-wide is increasing with most increases being located in states that chose not to get vaccinated because someone they know told them something they had heard from someone.

As people wait to see if their vacation plans can go on or if there might need to be an adjustment, and places used to unlimited population influxes wait to hear if they fit within the restrictions that will allow them to open, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida had not only made it known his state is totally open and reality free, but made of point of making sure the fun stuff was not all that was open, but so was the not so fun stuff.

The state’s numbers are soaring, and the hospitals are having to put patients in the halls.

“Obviously media does hysteria. You try to fear monger. And when you talk about hospitalizations. Our hospitals are open for business. Like I said, Jackson, the COVID patients are half of what they were last year. Even in places that have more, COVID-19 patients represent a fraction of the overall hospital beds.”

Broward County’s school board rescinded its vote to require facial coverings when in-person school starts this academic year because DeSantis signed an executive order preventing mask mandates in schools, with the threat of denying funds to any districts that don’t comply, even as Broward County Mayor Steve Geller pointed out,

“Unfortunately, Dade and Broward County lead the nation in hospitalizations. The numbers are doubling every 10 or 11 days. Geometric progression. This is horrifying.”

DeSantis already has a law signed in May that gives him power to invalidate local emergency public health measures, including mask mandates and limitations on business operations, and bans any business or government entity from requiring proof of vaccination.

While the district is allowing one kid’s parents who are denying science unless it can all be broken down in a statement using only simple words and at that, only twenty-five or less to decide the fate  of all other children including others like their own and those whose parents believe in science and would have helped end polio not prolong it, it has to cover itself, and so it did with a boiler plate, reality ignoring statement,

“Safety remains our highest priority.”
