There is one particular Democratic hopeful, to remain nameless, who, whether by accident or design, seems to rely heavily on younger people’s lack of historical knowledge. He neither acknowledges which of his ideas are not new but ones Liberals have attempted to enact for decades, nor does he correct historical misperceptions.

Being someone who has promoted liberal ideas since the 70s while being frustrated through the years that apathy translated into things we should already have not being so, and wishing the people whose votes could have helped hadn’t sat out elections for whatever reasons they claimed made that the best move, this annoys me.

The idea that as of 2015 these ideas are new is just laziness and ignorance writ large.

Once again, while just enjoying a beer in a bar with friends, I was approached by a supporter of a particular Democrat hopeful that felt the need to promote his chosen, and in doing so made comparisons to Hillary Clinton.

I had to first point out that she is not running so she is irrelevant to those hoping to be the party’s candidate, and secondly that his desire for her to just go away was rather ironic since he and his compatriots keep bringing her up so it is they who just will not let her go away.

He then made a comparison between Hillary and his pick that revealed he did not know history, and that any history there is only goes back to five years ago as he asserted that unlike his pick, Hillary had never supported universal healthcare. Obviously he had bought the memes and, like high school kids who live in a world of texts among a small, closed circle of friends without any contact with the wider world, his knowledge of history apparently comes from texts from those, who like himself, had limited knowledge.

So, in order to get back to my beer and conversation with friends, and away from what had all the signs of an oncoming frustrating conversation, I explained:

And that is where matters stood until the Affordable Care Act.

It is based on the Bible, the inerrant word of God with every word coming to us from God, so there is no wiggle room. What it says, it says and means.

Graham is upset that Mayor Peter Buttigieg has spoken several times about his Christian faith and has asserted that when both President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence hold and promote inhumane political positions whole claiming themselves good Christians they are being hypocritical.

But I appreciate the fact that the president does have a concern for Christian values, he does have a concern to protect Christians whether it’s here at home or around the world, and I appreciate the fact that he protects religious liberty and freedom.”

What he appreciates is that while his fire and Brimstone, the God of love being a spiteful, vindictive, spoiled God of hate and petulance approach to Christianity is not attracting people to Jesus and with them their wallets, Trump is helping to legislate all Americans to Graham’s version of Christianity.

Whatever is wrong with the country is not the result of selfservingly marrying religion to politics, is because,

Yet, he does not think Trump’s private actions are “nobody’s business”, and that a man who once asked, “Why do I have to repent or ask for forgiveness, if I am not making mistakes?” is okay without repentance.

Graham has defended the evangelical leaders who have remained faithful to Trump.

 “A lot of people are slamming evangelicals for supposedly giving Donald J. Trump a pass. That’s simply not true. No one is giving him a pass. I’m certainly not, and I’ve not met an evangelical yet who condones his language or inexcusable behavior from over a decade ago. However, he has apologized to his wife, his family, and to the American people for this. He has taken full responsibility (as long as you ignore the $130,000 porn star payoff). When it came to Graham’s hypocritical call for Mayor Pete to repent for being gay, while remaining one of the most ardent supporters of the thrice-married Trump, Rick Santorum, one of the most conservative religious politicians had this to say:

“I would say that you have every right to call him out on that. Because if he’s gonna say that about Pete Buttigieg, then he needs to when Donald Trump’s accusations come up about marital infidelity and other things that is [sic] equally as sinful. He should be equal and vociferous in calling out a similar sin.”

When asked, “Infidelity, you are saying, is a similar sin as being gay?”,

he went on to explain,

“Well that’s what the Christian religion teaches. Both are violations of the traditional and sacred bonds of marriage, that outside of marriage is sinful behavior, yes.”

And he added,

 “We have to be loving and tolerant of everybody. Everybody is due respect and love and should be treated with dignity and respect, and whether they choose it (being Gay) or not, I don’t know. I don’t really care. I treat people with dignity and respect no matter who they are.”

If even Santorum gets it, so should Graham.

Every day my Facebook feed and email inbox are filled with political news articles and memes.

We are in the early days of presidential campaigning, and I have not made up my mind who to support because I want to hear what each hopeful has to say, and I know in time, for whatever reason the crowded field of Democrats will winnow down for various reasons until there are fewer to chose from.

But, in the meantime, I am being told who I should support and why, while at the same time I am bring told what is wrong with me if I don’t at this time favor any one candidate.

What bothers me more is that some of the posts and emails are assessing candidates according to some sorts of purity tests, and the worst seem to be those applied to Mayor Pete.

Not only is he being judged as not being ”Gay enough”, but some have even referred to him as a Trojan Horse candidate who is using his being Gay t distract from his being a White man of privilege.

His coming out as Gay as an adult, and not at an earlier age, is being used by some to claim that because he was not out, he could not have possibly struggled as a gay man, ignoring that some of the difficulty in coming out is knowing, from having seen it, how out Gay people are treated, and part of the coming out process, besides dealing with the possible rejection by family and friends, is having to deal with the attitudes of total strangers who actually have no right to or anything upon which to judge you.

It is not an easy or simple decision and process, and it is definitely not an experience the majority of people have had to face. And the process and what plays into it IS a struggle.

He has proven himself as a person, a soldier, and a mayor, but what he is having to handle on the campaign trail not only illustrates what GLBT people face to varying degrees at times and in many places, but those who will never have to deal with it and who have no idea what a visceral attack it is will make it even worse by passing judgment on how he handles it.

Anti-gay protestors have showed up at his public events with some play acting Peter Buttigieg flogging Jesus with Satan looking on, and others yelling about Sodom and Gomorrah even as they show they really gave no idea what that whole thing is about.

That’s what God says and that settles it for me. I stand with the Word of God. I care enough about people to tell them the truth and to warn them about the judgment to come for all sin.”

He conveniently dropped the last part, “They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads,” but people know it’s there and what he meant.

A few years ago an Oklahoma politician who was running for office was questioned on his religious beliefs. That’s important there. He was a member of some Christian denomination that was neither Southern Baptist nor Evangelical, so it was decided he wasn’t the right type of Christian. Besides his being Gay, something the conservative crowd just cannot accept of a Christian, Buttigieg too is not the right type of Christian.

Meanwhile, the guy to my left has ordered a drink, handed the bartender a twenty, and, while the bartender goes to the register, made a quick run to the restroom. When the bartender returns and places his change on the bar and walks to another patron, I reach over and take a dollar from the pile of change and hand it to the guy on my right who then orders a drink.

The guy to my right never asked me to take the dollar, nor did he discuss my taking it from the guy on my left, neither did he tell me how to do it and then keep an eye out for the guy to my left’s coming out of the men’s room.

He clearly did not conspire with me to get the needed dollar, nor did he coordinate with me in taking it, but he was aware of what I did and accepted the benefit of my action.

His “crime” is that he saw me take the dollar, and without saying anything to either the bartender or the man whose dollar I took, gladly accepted the benefit.

He should have said something to the bartender so he could take the appropriate action, most likely either having me replace the dollar, kicking me out of the bar, or both.

If the guy to my right had told me to take the dollar and I refused, he would still have asked me to do it, and he is guilty of the attempt which I should point out to the bartender and the guy to me left so they could take the appropriate actions. The bartender could then bounce him, and the guy to my left would not be so trusting of fellow patrons in the future and would protect his change.
