First there was Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s campaign manager, saying,
“He doesn’t hurl personal insults.”
“I don’t like when people hurl personal insults, that will never change,” Conway said. “I’m the mother of four small children. That would be a terrible example for me to feel otherwise.”
“He has said that he any time he has caused somebody personal pain by saying something that he didn’t intend to cause personal pain. And I think those who have received it privately should take that expression of regret for them.”
But then he kept up the insults for which he wants to regret, but apparently can’t. Apologies are generally followed by an attempt to avoid the offending behavior. You cannot say, “I regret in advance what I am about to say”, and expect people to excuse you.
Trump himself has said
“Sometimes in the heat of debate, and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don’t choose the right words or you say the wrong thing … and believe it or not, I regret it — and I do regret it — particularly where it may have caused personal pain.”
And now we have Mike Pence saying in obviously feigned shock and disbelief after Tim Kaine said that Trump’s campaign is one based on insults at the Vice-Presidents’ debate,
“He says ours is an insult-driven campaign. Did you all just hear that? Ours is an insult-driven campaign?”
“I mean, to be honest with you, if Donald Trump had said all of the things that you’ve said he said in the way you said he said them, he still wouldn’t have a fraction of the insults that Hillary Clinton leveled when she said that half of our supporters were a basket of deplorables.”
But rather than put them all neatly in one basket, Donald has distributed his like individually wrapped sandwich cheese slices.
Along with the use of the middle school tactic of assigning nicknames, like “Crooked Hillary”, “Lying Ted”, and “little Marco”, a penis reference, so that the other kids will also dislike someone the name caller doesn’t, and do so without thinking or knowing why they have come to dislike someone beyond the influence of the nickname assigned, we have these examples:
“[George]Bush didn’t have the IQ [to be president].”
“I’m not a big fan [of Jeb Bush]. The last thing we need is another Bush” and “Jeb Bush has to like the Mexican Illegals because of his wife.”
” If Hillary Clinton can’t satisfy her husband what makes her think she can satisfy America?”
“What a waste of time being interviewed by Anderson Cooper when he puts on really stupid talking heads like Tim O’Brien-dumb guy with no clue!”
“I’ve known [Bill Cosby], and I’ve never liked him. I think he is a highly overrated guy, both in talent and in many other ways,”
Regarding his one time opponent Lindsey Graham, “What a stiff, what a stiff, Lindsey Graham. By the way he has registered zero in the polls. A total lightweight. In the private sector, he couldn’t get a job. Believe me. Couldn’t get a job. He couldn’t do what you people did. You’re retired as hell and rich. He wouldn’t be rich; he’d be poor”
And,
“What’s this guy, a beggar? He’s like begging me to help him with ‘Fox and Friends.’ ”
“The liberal clown Arianna Huffington told her minions at the money losing Huffington Post to cover me as entertainment. I am #1 in Huff Post Poll.”
“I hear Penn Jillette show on Broadway is terrible. Not surprised, boring guy. Without The Apprentice, show would have died long ago. I loved firing goofball atheist Penn on The Apprentice. He never had a chance. Wrote letter to me begging for forgiveness.”
“What people don’t know about Kasich- he was a managing partner of the horrendous Lehman Brothers when it totally destroyed the economy!”

“John McCain should be defeated in the primaries. Graduated last in his class at Annapolis–dummy!”
“The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

“Governor Perry failed on the border. He should be forced to take an IQ test before being allowed to enter the GOP debate. He’s doing very poorly in the polls. He put on glasses so people will think he’s smart. And it just doesn’t work! You know people can see through the glasses.”
Trump tweeted that Gov. George Pataki “couldn’t be elected dog catcher if he ran again—so he didn’t!”
“Robert [Pattinson] I’m getting a lot of heat for saying you should dump Kristen Stewart- but I’m right. If you saw the Miss Universe girls you would reconsider.”
“[Sanders] knows the country is ripped off. And I know the country is being ripped off, the difference is that I can do something about it and he can’t. He’ll never be able to negotiate with China.”
“The RNC has not been supportive. They were always supportive when I was a contributor. I was their fair-haired boy. The RNC has been, I think, very foolish.”
“Univision cares far more about Mexico than it does about the U.S. Are they controlled by the Mexican government? Has anyone seen the financials of Univision. They are doing really badly. Too much debt and not enough viewers. Need money fast. Funny!”
“You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her – wherever,” Trump said
Mocking reporter Serge Kovaleski, who suffers from arthrogryposis, “Now the poor guy, you ought to see the guy,” before mimicking him. “‘Uhh, I don’t know what I said. I don’t remember,'” while gyrating his arms mocking Kovaleski’s movements.
Trump insulted Khizr and Ghazala Kahn, Gol Star parents whose son, Army Captain Humayun Khan, because of Mr. Kahn’s speech at the Democratic National Convention. “If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably – maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.”
He went after Alicia Machado, not only in his original insults of calling her “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping”, but doubled down when he attempted to defend himself after the first presidential debate by defending himself.
Why was Rosie O’Donnell part of that debate?
And ironically, as Mike Pence was claiming the Trump campaign is not one of insults, Trump was tweeting, “Kaine looks like an evil crook out of the Batman movies” during the vice-presidential debate.
But apparently, none of these were insults.
