According to Sarah Palin, in her attempt to deflect attention away from her bad parenting, something that was even glaringly on display when, in spite of her son’s arrest for beating his baby’s momma, being intoxicated and in possession of a firearm while doing it, preventing the woman from calling the police, and then being belligerent with the police who arrived on the scene, she chose to make an attention grabbing personal appearance to endorse Donald Trump, the problem faced by veterans was the responsibility of President Obama.
In her words:
“I can talk personally about this. I guess it’s kind of the elephant in the room because my own family, going through what we’re going through today with my son, a combat vet having served in a Stryker Brigade fighting for you all, America, in the war zone.
The question, though, that comes from our own president, where they have to look at him and wonder, ‘Do you know what we go through? Do you know what we’re trying to do to secure America and to secure the freedoms that have been bequeathed us?'”
My son, like so many others, they come back a bit different. They come back hardened. They come back wondering if there is that respect for what their fellow soldiers and airmen and every other member of the military have given so sacrificially to this country, and that starts at the top. It’s a shame that our military personnel even have to question, have to wonder if they’re respected anymore.”
But the “elephant in the room” is, indeed, and elephant, not a president, or PTSD which is not an excuse for her bad parenting as her son was trouble long before he chose military service over jail.
The elephant wearing its Tea Bag accouterments shot down:
H.R. 1168 — Veterans Retraining Act – This bill would have provided for assistance to help veterans who are currently unemployed with their expenses while retraining for the current job market.
H.R. 1171 – Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program Reauthorization – This bill would have reauthorized programs in support of homeless veterans, to assist them with job training, counseling, and placement services through the Department of Veterans Affairs through 2014.
H.R. 1172 — Would have required List on VA Website of Organizations Providing Scholarships for Veterans, which would have done nothing more than direct the Department of Veterans Affairs to include information about scholarships for veterans.
H.R. 1293 — Disabled Veterans Home Improvement and Structural Alteration Grant Increase Act of 2009 – A bill in support of those who have fought for their country, passed by House Democrats and blocked from becoming law by Republicans.
This would have increased the amount paid by the VA to disabled veterans for necessary home structural improvements from $4,100 to $6,800 for those who are more than 50% disabled, and from $1,200 to $2,000 who are less than 50%, disabled. This meant, if a veteran lost the use of his legs in service of his country, the country would pay for the wheelchair ramp so that the veteran could live at home.
The total cost of this bill, according to CBO estimates, would have been $20 million. That’s about a quarter (25 cents) per family of four.
H.R. 1803 — Veterans Business Center Act – This bill would have set up a Veterans Business Center program within the Small Business Administration, which was to specialize in such programs as grants for service-disabled veterans, help them develop business plans and secure business opportunities. In other words, folks, it would create jobs and offer opportunities those who have fought in defense of our country.

H.R. 2352 – Job Creation Through Entrepreneurship Act – This would have combined a number of other bills that Republicans had blocked in the Senate previously, and added some elements. The bill would have establishes a Veterans Business Center Program; …. it would have establish a Military Entrepreneurs Program.
.
Along with this the House Appropriations Subcommittee, met with VA Secretary Bob McDonald to remove more than $1.4 billion in veteran services from President Obama’s proposed 2016 budget. The cuts included more than $690 million earmarked for direct VA medical care and $582 million in VA construction projects. It is estimated that 70,000 fewer veterans would be able to receive needed care.
The Women Veterans and Families Health Services Act of 2014 would have provided fertility treatment and counseling for severely wounded veterans and their spouses, but Republicans proposed an amendment to prevent any involvement with Planned Parenthood.
The Veterans Health and Benefits and Military Retirement Pay Restoration Act 0f 2014 would have expanded healthcare and education for veterans. It died because Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans attached an amendment to the bill which would have levied sanctions on Iran.
The Veterans Jobs Corps Act of 2012 would have established the Veteran’s Jobs Corps to provide gainful employment to more than 20,000 veterans through public works projects in their own communities at a cost of $1 billion over 5 years. Senate Republicans blocked the bill because it was unpaid for. They then proposing a bill to increase military spending with no way to pay for it.
The Homeless Women Veterans and Homeless Veterans With Children Act of 2010 was to expand assistance for homeless women veterans and homeless veterans with children, as well as increase funding for federal grant programs to address the issues surrounding homelessness amongst veterans. Mitch McConnell killed it on behalf of then Senator Tom Coburn who had objected to it because “If we don’t start paying for new programs and continue on our path to bankruptcy we’ll have a homelessness problem beyond imagination,” according to his spokesman John Hart.
That is the real, and symbolic elephant in the room when it comes to disrespecting the troops while crowing that you support them.
And not to be left out of sounding strong and pro-veteran, Donald Trump supported Palin when he said,
“Look, everything starts at the top. He’s the president. And I think you can certainly do that. And all you have to do is look at the Veterans Administration, and look at the bad, the horrible care our vets get. One of the many things I’m going to do is I’m going to straighten that mess out.”
If he wins, and Palin gets into his cabinet, good luck veterans.
How will the GOP explain themselves if, after continually blocking all the pro-veteran bills claiming their actions were based on fiscal responsibility and principle, they turn around and vote for the very same things they opposed because there is a different president.
It would mean they left the vets hanging to win a political game. A high stakes game they should not have been playing.
There’s your elephant, Ms Palin
