The FABULOUS Village of the Damned.

A lot of conservatives deny that there is anything going on with the climate.

One conservative senator, who is also the chairman of the committee that deals with the environment, Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, is beyond certain that if there is anything wrong, God will take care of things. So, human beings do not have to change any behaviors to help preserve the environment because God will correct our errors.

We have all the fun without any of the responsibility.

Scientists have shown that mankind does have an influence on our climate, but they are scientists, and what do they now about science? Many in the GOP, and conservatives in general, believe that their reports and conclusions should be subject to public opinion, especially as it can be influenced by the politicians and religious extremists who refuse to explain reality to their constituents.

They believe that, even though mankind in general has no influence on our world’s climate, there is one part of the human population that does.

Gay people.

What all of humanity cannot do, a very small part of it has an overwhelming ability to do.

According to Rick Wiles, a Christian broadcaster, Gay people are responsible for some of the most violent natural disasters the earth has ever seen.

In the past, according to such religious luminaries as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, Gays were responsible for earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, forest fires, tornadoes, and hurricanes, many of which have missed areas with large Gay populations while hitting those that are very religious.

Pastor Kevin Swanson of Generations with Vision Ministry dedicated a special radio show broadcast to blaming gays and lesbians for Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina. “The two worst storms, material-wise, in the history of America has happened in just the last five years and here’s the interesting thing about this storm, it hit New York City and if you’re trying to think of the most pro-homosexual, liberal cities in America, you would probably say, give me the top three most pro-homosexual, pro-liberal cities in America, it would probably be?”

Not to be out done, Mr. Wiles now claims that the California drought is caused by God’s punishing that state because of abortion, witchcraft, and the Gays.

Now if these three groups are that influential on what happens to the world, with the Gays being the most consistent cause, I would think getting them angry would be something people like Wiles would want to avoid.

Wiles also claimed that Ebola would cleanse the world of Gays, but that doesn’t seem to be working out that way.

Last year Wiles claimed that “a race of super gay male soldiers” was plotting to kill Christians and take over America, and that Hitler was “trying to create a race of super gay male soldiers”. He has even predicted that once the Supreme Court strikes down bans on same-sex marriage, God is going to go nuts.

A lot of Gay kids face bullying in schools, and there are a lot of red states passing legislation that will allow this bullying in the name of religion.

I don’t think it is wise, in light of the power these pastors claim the Gay kids have, to get the Gay kids angry.

I have visions of Gay kids gathering in front of schools where bullying is allowed, and staring at them a la “Village of the Damned” style until disaster strikes.

Unless, of course, God got them first.

But there might be a football game or an election going on somewhere, and we know that those are God’s priorities.

It will all be a matter of timing.

Older people will remember that margarine commercial where we were warned, “it’s not nice to fool Mother Nature”.

It would seem that if we Gay people have the powers that these cartoon pastors say we have, it might not be the smartest idea to tick us off.

Imagine what havoc we could wreak if, deciding who our enemies are, we move in great numbers to those locations where our enemies reside, set up communities, and by having committed loving relationships bring down the wrath of God on those areas.

We could conquer by judicious use of collateral damage.

O tempura. O mores.

First we had that GOP meeting on the day of President Obama’s first inaugural when they discussed plans that would keep him from being successful. They obstructed whatever he attempted, even when he proposed those thing that they had wanted, so he would look bad, and they would have the chance to take over both houses of congress.

This was followed by Mitch McConnell announcing after the 2010 elections that the priority of the GOP was to make sure that President Obama was a one term president.

Recently we have had the GOP get all moist when Vladimir Putin flexed his muscles in Syria and the Ukraine, going all agog like ‘tween’ girls mooning over one of the current boy bands. They found him so dreamy.

But then Putin began to show his true colors, and fell slightly out of disfavor. He wasn’t useful in making President Obama look bad, especially since Obama’s stand on sanctions placed on Russia seemed to be paying off.

Oh, but then they found that they could cause problems with Obama’s attempts, along with France, England, Russia, China, and Germany, to negotiate with Iran to keep them from developing a nuclear bomb by inviting Benjamin Netanyahu to speak against that at a joint meeting of both houses of congress.

When that began to be seen as a bad move by quite a few Americans, 47 GOP senators sent that letter to Iran’s leaders telling them that regardless what success President Obama might have with that diplomacy, they could simply undo it if they were to take over the White House.

This also did not go over too big with the American people as it appeared that the GOP senators might have engaged in a little treason, and may have angered the other five negotiating countries while giving all other countries the impression that America’s word cannot be trusted.

But like a snowball rolling down hill, the GOP seems incapable of reining itself in.

The latest?

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wrote his own letter to all 50 governors of the United States, the basic theme of which is “the GOP does not agree with President Obama, so just ignore him”.

President Obama issued an executive order that coal-fired power plants have to cut greenhouse gas pollution in the coming years.

McConnell accused Obama of being lawless, and should just be ignored. Keep those greenhouse gases coming. After all, those congressmen and senators who keep telling us they are not scientists have concluded that those gases do not contribute to climate change.

The GOP steadfastly refuses to give any serious consideration to the science of climate change, often referring to the scientists who want it dealt with as “alarmist”, and want the science to be the subject of public opinion that they hope to sway.

What President Obama wants is for states to follow the EPA guidelines, and since they aren’t, he has made a stand.

According to Obama’s senior adviser, Brian Deese, “What you have is the Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, going way outside the bounds of the position he was elected to”.

What’s interesting is that while President Obama wants to preserve our environment, Mitch McConnell wants to preserve one of his cash cows.

While John Boehner got $325,698 in contributions from the coal industry that produces the coal responsible for greenhouse gases, McConnell got $268,150, the second largest amount.

If the states do not ignore the EPA and Obama, Mitch might lose money.

Now that Ted Cruz has announced his candidacy for president, the religious floodgates will open.

The competition will be fierce as to which of all the eventual Republican candidates is more religious than the others, and this will be accompanied by their claims as to which American citizens are on the “God Hates” list, which American citizens their supporters need to reject and treat shabbily, and which of them and their supporters will be saved when God sees their devotion to Him and what they claim are His wishes.

Of course, those most likely to be on the saved list will be those who think  just like the candidate.

Hatred and mistreatment of scapegoats, and listening to and following what the candidates will claim came to them directly from God, will get a lot of people to vote for them. Except, the same confusion from the last presidential election might enter, especially if people remember that a number of candidates claimed God had chosen them to run, and they lost to the “anti-Christ”.

Perhaps, having learned His lesson, God will choose only one candidate this time, but with them all claiming to be that one, well, there will be confusion again.

And, of course, the God who is making the final judgment and picking the one candidate will be an angry, old, white man who created mankind, giving  us free will so that He can punish us for using it.

But, wouldn’t it be great if after all their attempts to use people as the “enemy” to scare people into voting for them, and claiming a politically expedient relationship and deep knowledge of His mind, these same candidates find, when their time comes and they stand before the throne of God, He turns out to be a big, Black, leather queen who is not amused.

GOP priorities

cow

We have already seen that the Republicans, who claim they are defending the sanctity of life when they attempt to pass bills to protect the unborn fetus from conception to birth, are less concerned about that same fetus after birth.

The red state Republican opposition to expanding Medicaid keeps many of its low income families and individuals, many of them children, from having affordable health insurance.

But in Missouri, a red state that did not expand Medicaid, Republicans have passed the Dairy Revitalization Act that will help provide insurance for cows.

That’s right. They want to make sure that cows get regular veterinarian care even as children can’t get regular pediatric care.

The bill will “subsidize federal dairy insurance for up to 70 percent of farmers’ premium payments.”

Democratic Governor Jay Nixon is expected to sign it.

So even though many people in Missouri, about 300,000, could use the help from Medicaid expansion to get coverage, at no cost to the state while actually saving money, the state would prefer to make sure the cows are all right at a cost to the state.

Really, he said discrimination respects everyone’s rights.

In 1989 The Washington D.C. city council passed the Human Rights Act that contained the Armstrong Amendment, a religious exemption to what was contained in the act. In 2014 the Washington, D.C. city council repealed that amendment so that GLBTQ students would be protected from discrimination in religious schools.

All citizens should be treated equally.

However, two Republican senators, Ted Cruz of Texas and James Lankford of Oklahoma have decided that protecting GLBTQ kids from discrimination in religious settings is not a good idea, and have filed a resolution to repeal the DC law. They see no problem with GLBTQ children having no protection against discrimination.

The MetroWeekly, a GLBT news paper in D.C., explains that the two Senators “insist that the act violates the freedom of religion of educational institutions who might otherwise be forced to recognize gay students groups, in opposition to their religious beliefs regarding homosexuality, as well as those who choose to attend those schools.”

Cruz and Lankford claim that with the new Human Rights Act of 2014 the City Council “is attempting to force religious institutions to provide services, make employment decisions, or participate in activities that directly violate their faith”.

In a press release issued by Cruz he stated that “No government entity should be able to coerce organizations – whether they be non-profits or religious schools – into funding abortion services or promoting gender policy that is contrary to the organization’s fundamental mission”.

He justifies this by stating, “Rather than discriminating against pro-life and religious organizations, D.C. should welcome diversity of thought and protect the freedom of conscience. We must stop this assault on the Catholic Church, and we must act to protect religious liberty. Congress has a constitutional responsibility to oversee the nation’s capital, and I urge my colleagues in both houses to pass this resolution and affirm the First Amendment rights of all citizens.”

So in order to protect “religious liberty”, diversity of thought, and the First Amendment rights of all citizens, diversity, and the First Amendment rights of GLBTQ students must be eliminated.

In his press release Senator Lankford said, “What the D.C. Council has done is a major threat to the fundamental right to religious freedom for D.C. residents and organizations, and a brazen display of intolerance”.

To these two senators equal treatment of Washington D.C.’s GLBTQ students is a “a brazen display of intolerance”, and the recognition of their Human Rights is a violation of religious tenets.

Discrimination of them should be allowed because a person can claim such treatment is religious freedom, and, besides, not being allowed to be intolerant toward them is intolerance.

The coalition opposing both Cruz and Lankford’s resolutions point out that they are conveniently claiming the Human Rights Act of 2014 is an unprecedented assault on religious liberty.

And as the opponents point out, “Religious liberty is a fundamental American value. It guarantees us the freedom to hold any belief we choose and the right to act on our religious beliefs, but it does not allow us to discriminate against or otherwise harm others”.

Washington D.C. has “home rule”, but anything the city Council does has to be approved by the House and Senate, even though the city has no representation in either. If the Cruz/Lankford resolution is to go into effect both house must approve it, and then the president must sign it.

Matthew 19: 13-15
Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, “Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” After laying His hands on them, He departed from there.

I guess the children have to be the right ones, though.

Harsh, but true

I think it is obvious that there are those in Washington who want another war. They loved the ones we had in Iraq and Afghanistan, probably made money off them, and then really wanted us to get involved in the Syrian civil war.

Probably would make more money from connections to arms manufacturers if we were involved.

They got frustrated when that didn’t happen.

They aren’t supporters of any diplomacy that could keep Iran from having a nuclear bomb, and they cheer for Israel which also does not want a diplomatic agreement, but seems intent on having a war the United States will be dragged into.

We have spent over $6 trillion so far on the two wars in the Middle East, and that cost does not include the ignored cost of 4,439 dead in Iraq and 2,150 dead in Afgahnistan, with over 30,000 wounded in Iraq and around 18,000 wounded in Afghanistan. There are over 100,000 returning troops suffering from PTSD, and over 200,000 coming home with traumatic brain Injury. Among the wounded, close to 2,000 have had some form of amputation.

And when they come home and the uniforms are taken off, they do not get the ovations they had received when they got on a plane, bus, or attended some sporting event in uniform, and aren’t on the news because of a video of their surprise return home with some child practically soiling themselves with joy. While the debates as to who supports the troops more, with flag waving and patriotic platitudes being the benchmarks, rage on making the home front feel less guilty about our indifference to the conditions they face during deployment, and they look like any other homeless, nameless person, and can’t find jobs, have it difficult returning to civilian life, or commit suicide at a rate close to 22 a day, they are finished. They become invisible.

Oh, and after putting themselves in harm’s way, they come home and become a financial burden on the United States. Isn’t that why we cut their benefits, fight having job-training programs, cut food stamps, and discuss ways to cut funding for the VA?

We love them when we can use them, and resent that they came home and cost us to help them.

Just too many are still around.

What we have now is a glut of military personnel, but the possibility of more wars to send them to.

We cleaned the process up by throwing out the term “cannon fodder”, which implies possible human death, and replacing it with “Boots on the ground”, which removes humanity. Boots don’t die; the people wearing them do. Don’t refer to the people and it’s easier to handle.

And as long as we say patriotic things, wave flags, recite platitudes, and avoid their humanity, it is easy to send the military off to fight a war, and that way we can keep them busy and no have to face the cost of paying them back when they return home.

Maybe with the next war we will be luckier. We will get more oil and have less people coming home.

Yeah, it sounds harsh, but why is Washington always looking for a war to fight, and “reasons” to cut what is needed to help the troops returning home?
